i have a lot of confidence in harry reid's negotiating ability. mitch mcconnell is a veteran negotiator, and i think there's a far better prospect of something being worked out in the senate than there was dealing with speaker boehner and his completely dysfunctional house republican party. >> sure. well, abiding by convention and of course protocol, the senate won't return until sunday. will there be enough time for the senate leaders to really craft a deal that is substantiative and makes a difference, especially to the most vulnerable americans? >> yeah, i think the two keys that the president laid out are to protect middle class americans from tax increases and to protect families that haven't been able to get back in the workforce have having their unemployment insurance cut off. and if those two things can be done, a lot of the rest can be worked in in the weeks and days to come. we have other deadlines coming up for the debt limit and for the end of the continuing resolution, so i think this is likely to be a bit of a continuing process. bu

harry reid is addressing the senate. this is days before the fall off of the fiscal cliff. senate democrats are telling republicans get out of the way of a last-minute deal, accept tax increases for people making $250,000 a year. get out of the way. accept that. joining us is the founder of the media research center. blame if problem is spending and neither side is being serious about spending. neither side is. stuart: when you put your finger on it. they are politicians, are they not? they have to have in the back of their mind, they are politicians. they have to bear in mind the next election can they get reelected? can any politician get reelected by saying i am going to cut entitlements, cut spending? you are going to lose something? >> do you realize we have been doing this for 25 years? do you understand why we are in the mess we're in now? for 25 years both sides kicked the ball down and that is why we have not had a budget in three years. nobody wants to take a stand. every single republican, republican ran for office on the pledge to hold the line on taxes and cut

i think if harry reid does it, fine. let him do it. we need to think of what the country needs more than what each party does and concerned about the election on january 3rd? if nothing happens, he may have to worry about the election, john boehner. what i would advise him to do, he doesn't seek my advice, let me give you some advice. be what you want to be. do what you have to do. and democrats will support you if you do that. >> do you think at this point there's even enough time to get a deal done? realist achally. >> absolutely. there is time. now, i know we went out of session today and won't be in session technically until monday. that can change over the weekend. through emergency. so what happens to saturday and sunday? i mean, we all rather be with our families and friends but the fact is america needs this done right now. you know what's disappointed me most of all, craig? talking heads, many of them on television and some members of my own party saying, well, it won't be as bad. we'll take it up in the new congress. i think
